About IGNOU PGDMH – PG Diploma in Mental Health
This course teaches students how to identify psychological issues and provide basic support to people facing mental distress. It prepares learners to work in community health settings, hospitals, and NGOs where they can assist doctors and senior psychologists in managing patient care.
Who Should Choose This Programme?
If you are a doctor, nurse, or social worker already working in a hospital or a village clinic and want to learn how to handle patients with depression or anxiety, this programme is for you. It is also a great choice for graduates in psychology or sociology who want to work in community outreach or school counseling roles. This diploma helps professionals who want to add mental health skills to their existing medical or social work practice without doing a full two-year degree.
Why Do Students Choose This Programme?
Most students choose this diploma because it is affordable and can be completed while they continue their full-time jobs in clinics or government offices. It is a recognized qualification from a central university that provides a strong base in mental health topics without the high costs of private colleges. Since the course includes an internship, students get to learn by doing actual work in a hospital, which makes them more confident in their skills.
Where Does This Programme Help?
After completing the PG Diploma in Mental Health, graduates can find work as Mental Health Workers, Community Counselors, or Project Coordinators in mental health initiatives. You can target jobs at organizations like NIMHANS, state health departments, or international NGOs like Doctors Without Borders and various local charities. It is also very helpful for people running their own private nursing homes or social service centers who want to offer better support to their community.
